Job Training

Retraining of dislocated workers for new skills

The top priority for workers who lose jobs as a result of company downsizing, layoff or buyout is finding a new job.  But what kind of job do you look for if your skills are outdated and no longer needed?  New employment may be very different from your old one, but this isn't unusual.  On average, workers change jobs completely three times in their working lives. For additional information and how to apply click on this site Dislocated Workers. For more information call Janice Carpenter at 218-631-7660.

Career-related assessment of skills, interests and abilities

You want to work, but lack skills?  You would like training for a career, but are unsure of what courses to take?  An in-depth evaluation of your abilities, interests and skill levels by a professional counselor will identify your personal strengths and needs to help you make a better decision.  Choices CT is an in-depth career assessment tool that will help you identify educational programs and career fields directly related to your skills, personal strengths, abilities and interests.  Along with an in-depth evaluation you will learn about placement potential and wage information.  For an appointment Call Pam at 218-631-7660.

Personalized job seeking assistance

Eligible job seekers have access to information on available training, and instruction on how to seek and apply for work.  A counselor works one-on-one with individuals developing job seeking skills, preparing a resume and conducting video interviews.  We can help defray the lodging, meal and travel costs associated with job interviews.  You must complete an application and have interviews confirmed prior to travel. Contact Karen at 218-631-7660 for more information

Career resource center

Workshops are conducted for groups of individuals on such topics as How to Cope with Unemployment, Job Seeking and Interviewing Skills and How to Find the Hidden Job Market.  Help is available to develop a professional resume of your employment history and skills.  Resumes, reference sheets, and cover and thank you letters are processed on laser jet printers for clean, sharp copies.  Telephones and fax machines are available at no charge to contact prospective employers. The Job Search System workshops are conducted on Monday and Tuesdays. Job Clubs are held on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Call 218-631-7660 to make an appointment.

Support services

Sometimes barriers occur for persons going to school or seeking employment.  Financial help for child care, emergency car repairs, clothing or travel can help smooth the way to a training or employment goal.  When paying the tuition costs for an individual in a training program, we can also pay for necessary test or certification fees, such as welding, ASE, RN or LPN.
Call Frank at 218-631-7660 for information.

Career counseling

Professional staff, several with master's degrees with an emphasis on counseling, more available to help you identify a career goal, and find a practical way to reach that goal.  Counselors help you analyze your strengths so you can make appropriate decisions about career training programs and employment options. Call Karen at 218-631-7660 for information.

Classroom training tuition assistance

We will pay tuition costs for eligible people enrolled in certified professional trade school, technical, community, or four-year college programs which teach technical skills required to perform a specific job.  Payment is made for tuition, required books, uniforms, test and certification fees. Call Frank at 218-631-7660 for information.

Youth employment programs

We administer summer and year-round employment programs geared to help young people (ages 14 through 21) enter "earn and learn" situations.  Summer jobs provide a paycheck for eight weeks, and entry-level training in a variety of occupations at nonprofit, educational and other community-oriented work sites.

Counselors intervene to help youth who have a strong likelihood of leaving school due to problems with teen parenting, homelessness, runaway situations, juvenile court participation, chemical dependency, disabilities, economic hardship, English language deficiency, or difficult family life situations to complete high school and move on to post-secondary training, or transition to work.  The counselors mentor young students, working one-on-one with them, identifying problems, encouraging youth to develop personal goals for continued education and job preparation.  Often, placement into appropriate part-time employment illustrates the relationship between school studies and work. Call Frank at 218-631-7660 for information.

Older worker employment assistance

If you are over 55 years of age, meet the income eligibility, are looking for a full or part-time job and are having difficulty approaching employers, we can help you identify your skills, offer tips on job seeking and interviewing, find unadvertised job opportunities, and recommend suitable training programs, if necessary.  If you are a mature entrepreneur, we can help write business plans and market your products. You can also contact Green Thumb Inc. for additional information or Call Jen at 218-631-7660 for details.
