Earning a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) can open the door to occupational opportunity, job advancement, admission to post-secondary educational institutions, and personal feelings of self-worth. The tests of General Educational Development provide one option for gaining a high school credential.
The exam includes five separate skill areas, Writing Skills, Social Studies, Science, Interpreting Literature and the Arts, and Mathematics. The test uses a multiple-choice format and each section is timed; the Writing Skills portion also requires an essay of about 200 words.
The GED is accepted by virtually all of the nation's
colleges and universities as an equivalent to a high school diploma for admissions
purposes, recognized for employment and promotion opportunities, and correlated with
positive feelings of high self-esteem for those who have earned the credential.
