Week of November 16 = Transition

It is very hard to move forward if you are always looking backward!  When dealing with the loss of a job, we need to process the change and deal with any unresolved issues and move forward.  If we chose to not let go and move on…this will prevent you from getting a new position.

Everyone goes through a cycle when they lose their job.  First we usually experience denial…saying to ourselves, I can not believe this has happened to me.  Then we get angry, feeling like we have done so much for this company and how could they do this to us.  Next is self-blame or depression.  In this stage we are wondering what we did wrong.  Hopefully, this will bring on a struggle within ourselves, and if handled appropriately, we will believe this was for the best and start looking into the future with hope.  At this stage of the cycle….we will then find success in getting a new job.

Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how we react to it!

The saying above is so true…think about it for a minute.  If we are not defensive and try to logically think about things instead of reacting, we have the ability to work through the issue, find a solution and move forward!  This can be the key to finding our next job!

A few tips for managing these feelings as we go through this cycle are listed below:

  • Talking to Others

  • Support Groups – Networking Groups

  • Writing a Letter

  • Physical Exercise

  • Counseling

  • Deep Breathing

  • Facing Your Fears

Remember, the key is taking care of yourself and trying to stay positive.   Work through the cycle and remember, you are good at what you do and when you do find the position you are looking for, the chances are it will be a positive change.  So try to stay positive and keep your head up.  Many people find positive self talk also helps get through the roller coaster ride of looking for a job.
